Why palliative care matters

A peaceful, dignified end-of-life journey – something we all deserve

These sentiments underpin the goals of palliative care. This specialized care is focused on the individual, supporting him or her through life’s final journey. Palliative care aims to improve quality of life by providing relief from pain and assisting with the social, emotional and spiritual needs of each person and family. It does not focus on curing the illness. It looks at each individual’s unique needs and circumstances and provides comfort and solace at a time when it is needed most. It strives to help patients live as actively and fully for as long as possible.

You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.” Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice
